Dating a Single Parent - Being Prepared When Your New Partner Has ChildrenExcerpt : If you have met your dream partner and they have children then the relationship will not be as straightforward as it would have been if it was just the two of you. Dating a single parent needn't be a If you have met your dream partner and they have children then the relationship will not be as straightforward as it would have been if it was just the two of you. Dating a single parent needn't be a problem though and there are many examples of partnerships where children are involved that are very rewarding for everyone. It just takes a little more understanding and appreciation on the part of the childless partner to really smooth things over and make the relationship work. This doesn't mean it's all your responsibility but being prepared will help enormously! Firstly, accept that your new partner is part of a family package. They will have to be a parent first and partner second. They may not always be able to do “spur of the moment” dates and ill children and changes to childcare arrangements will inevitably result in dates being cancelled at the last minute on occasion. Don’t take it personally when this happens. Your partner will almost certainly be as disappointed as you. If your partner is not living with their children, their access visits will be very precious to them. You will probably not be included in these meetings at the early stages of your relationship. This is not a rejection or any judgement about you so don’t take this personally or put pressure on you partner to include you too soon. Be understanding and maintain an appropraite distance. Respect the privacy of your partner and their kids during these times and try not to call too often or drop in. Never ask them to cancel arrangements with their kids. If children get jealous of you before you even meet because you are taking their parents attention away things will not get off to a great start when they do eventually meet you. If your
partner is the full time carer for their kids, it is easy to feel pushed out at times. However, being a single parent is very tough and dating just adds another complexity. Guilt and exhaustion are probably the feelings they’ll experience more than any other, so don’t be surprised if sometimes your partner simply doesn’t have the energy to arrange a babysitter for a night on the town. Try to make arrangements well in advance to give your partner time to sort out childcare arrangements and show your understanding of the situation. In the early days of your relationship, your new partner will probably be very reluctant to let you know personal details. It is a protective instinct and they will be looking from understanding from you. The best way to build trust is to share information about yourself. Don’t keep unnecessary secrets. If you are open and inclusive about your background, friendships and work life, your partner will feel more comfortable sharing information with you. However, give it time and don’t put pressure on them to give details until they are ready. Why not try and see it from their point of view? Read dating as a single parent which talks about introducing a new partner to kids and see if it helps you understand their position a little better.
