individual. I know guys who happen to use messenger a lot and they love it. For me personally, I have met many, many women whom I chatted with over IM first. There is no hard or fast rule.

Of added benefit, chatting over IM allows you to build your conversational skills if they are lacking. These are not too different from the skills used when chatting on the phone or in-person. This is more food for thought as you are still deciding which one is best to use.
